Lessons:

  • Build Your Personal Brand Before It’s Too Late

  • Why Chilling on the Beach Isn’t Enough

  • Find Your Unique Edge and Stand Out

  • Reflect: Are You on the Right Path?

  • Help Others to Win in Life and Business

Lesson 1: Start Your Personal Brand Before It’s Too Late

When Virgil was building his business with his friends, he wasn’t the main face of the brand. Instead, one of the three founders took that role, which was fine at the time. However, later on, as they encountered setbacks, it presented some challenges. Years later, after Virgil retired and found new purposes in life, he discovered the importance of personal branding. He chose his platforms, developed strategies, and dived fully in. Now, he has a strong following on both LinkedIn and X, and shares a daily newsletter with thousands of subscribers. His advice? Start earlier!

Lesson 2: Think About What You Truly Enjoy

Let’s be honest. We all dream of—or at some point in our lives have dreamt of—getting rich and retiring early. Imagine: chilling on the beach, drink in hand, with no obligations, day after day. Sounds like a dream, right? Well, maybe for some. Virgil was lucky enough to experience it. His response? It was good at first, but you get bored. Of course, it may work for some, but I trust Virgil on this one—the majority of us would feel empty after a while. That’s what led him to think about what he truly enjoyed. He switched from spending all day on the PlayStation (yes, that was a hyperbole, but you get the point) to finding a new purpose in life.

Lesson 3: Find Your Competitive Edge

How do you stand out from the crowd? How do you build a business that thrives in a competitive market? How do you find your USP? These are questions every entrepreneur asks. Virgil asked himself these very questions when he transitioned from an employee role to freelancing, and then from freelancing to entrepreneurship. His approach? Look at things from a different angle. When everyone else looks left, you look right. Be different, be unique, and stand out. It’s not as easy as it sounds, but that’s the reality. So, adopt Virgil’s mindset—not necessarily to be a rebel (although it might help), but to be different and figure out what makes you unique.

Lesson 4: Reflect on Your Journey Along the Way

LBack when Virgil worked as an employee for many years, he eventually questioned whether it was something he wanted to do for the rest of his life. That’s a question I’ve asked myself too, and I bet we’re not the only ones. In fact, I challenge you to ask yourself the same. After all, what’s better than doing what you truly enjoy? Of course, it’s not always possible for many reasons, but I’m sure we can all take steps, big or small, to make it happen or at least get closer to it—whether it’s sooner or later. Virgil experienced this again when he shifted from freelancing to entrepreneurship, and I hope it encourages you to reflect on your own journey too. I certainly will.

Lesson 5: Provide Value to Others and Help Them

After Virgil retired and then returned to work, he discovered a new purpose: helping people, while of course, making some money along the way. He didn’t have to work again, but he wanted to help others, share what he had learned, and provide value based on his journey. As he said—and as we can see from the successful testimonials on his website—he’s had plenty of success stories, particularly with big names familiar to LinkedIn audiences. This also ties into another point we discussed, which is mentoring and coaching, but that’s for another lesson. Regardless, how can you provide value to others and help them?

Looking at his bio or about section, you might question whether it’s real and legit. Which I think is natural in today’s digital landscape, where scams are lurking around every corner. Building X-figure businesses, coaching top entrepreneurs, chilling on sunny Bali beaches, and more—it sounds like a dream, doesn’t it? That’s why you need to tune in to hear Virgil’s whole story. From growing up in Holland to moving to Bali, building successful businesses, and eventually helping others create successful courses, we covered everything—all infused with a high dose of positivity. Don’t miss out!

Keep producing,
Tommen
