See how overcoming personal challenges can fuel resilience and open new pathways
Hello Producers,
Do you know people such as Derek Sivers, Oliver Burkeman, or Seth Godin? No, sadly they are not my upcoming guests (at least not yet!). But James, the latest guest, was fortunate enough to speak with them on his podcast. What’s more, James is only 21 and he’s also a coach, helping people on their journeys. As someone who doesn’t know much about coaching, I was genuinely curious and excited for this episode.
James Brackin IV is a driven coach and podcaster whose journey from personal tragedy to professional triumph is truly inspiring. At just 21 years old, James has channeled profound life experiences—losing family members at a young age and facing his own early health scares—into a mission of empowering others. As the host of the top 1% podcast, The You Can Too Podcast, he dives deep into human psychology and lifestyle design, offering actionable insights to overcome self-sabotage and achieve personal goals.
With a fresh perspective and relentless drive, James delivers powerful strategies and engaging conversations that motivate listeners to challenge their limits and pursue their true potential. Lesson 1: Age Is Just a Number
This phrase gets thrown around a lot, but the latest episode proves it perfectly. James is just 21 years old and already an experienced coach, ambitious podcaster, and someone with a mindset we could all learn from. What’s notable is when he decided to become a coach. I don’t want to be judgmental, but I would assume that people might initially look at him negatively due to his age. As James mentioned, he was indeed the youngest in his course and hadn’t met anyone his age in the field. Regardless, this didn’t deter or demotivate him. So, whether you feel you’re too young or too old, remember that age is just a number.
Lesson 2: Just Ask
A question James gets asked frequently is how he secures such big names for his podcast. The answer is simple: just ask. Applying this to podcasting, asking someone to be a guest never hurts. Even if 9 out of 10 people decline, there’s still that one who might say yes. Many people assume it’s not worth asking, which actually increases your chances of being the lucky one. So, apply this approach to your own situation—whether it’s asking for help, reaching out to someone, or being genuinely curious about something. Just ask.
Lesson 3: Be Curious
James received great feedback for his podcast, largely due to his preparation. I was curious about what this preparation entails and how he structures his podcasts. It’s not just about getting the inside scoop; it’s about being inspired and learning how to improve. James embodies curiosity—whether it’s asking questions others don’t, exploring feelings in specific situations, or posing genuine questions that come to mind. So, be curious in your own scenarios. Think outside the box and you might uncover something new, become more memorable with interesting questions, and discover insights you didn’t know before.
Lesson 4: Turn Adversity into Strengths
James experienced significant challenges early in his life, including the loss of his father and grandfather. While these are undoubtedly difficult events, James managed to find positives in these situations. He used these experiences to find new meaning and direction in his life. After being a passionate baseball player, an injury forced him to quit, but he turned this setback into a positive outcome. It takes courage, reflection, and maturity to find meaning in such unfortunate circumstances. This was one of the biggest takeaways from the episode.
Lesson 5: Be Present
I asked James about his future goals and plans, not only for his coaching career and podcasting but also in general. While he does have plans, he emphasized that he doesn’t focus too much on the long term. This approach allows him to be more present, focus on the now, and maximize the present moment. This is something I’m trying to keep in mind. We often chase goals and milestones, forgetting to enjoy the journey. So remember to focus on the present moment and enjoy right now.
I hope that James’ mindset, ambitions, and insights inspire you on your own journey. His story certainly inspired me and offered many valuable takeaways. What about you? Do you have a coach? If yes, would you recommend them? If not, are you planning to get one? Or, even better, are you a coach yourself? Make sure to let me know!
Keep producing,
Tommen
